Museum & Residential College for UVa

Project Prompt: Use Madison Bowl, a sunken grass field across the street from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the UVa Academical Village, Fralin Art Museum, and UVa Architecture school, and turn it into a museum and residential college for the arts.

4th year undergraduate Architecture school project, Fall 2022.

My Project:

This project proposes a new interpretation of the idea of joint living and learning. Here, everywhere you go, you are surrounded by art new and old.

The students who live here are artists, their work on display side by side with the art of the Fralin Collection serves as inspiration in their studies and life. The design from the room to the hallways, common rooms, and overall building plan fosters moments of connection between art, artists, and visitors to create a community and identity for arts grounds.

The buildings use brick and neoclassical arches seen on every historical building on grounds for its outer layers to connect it with the larger university. Meanwhile, the interior spaces take advantage of double height spaces and larger, modern windows to allow in more light. The layout of 6 separate buildings allows creates moments of curated identity through courtyard installations, landscaping, and specific programmatic design in individual buildings.
